Manchester Central Convention Complex has won the contract to host the IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Europe conference from 5 to 7 December 2011.
The conference is sponsored by the most prestigious electrical engineering society in the world, the IEEE, based in the USA. It will discuss the use of information and communication technology (ICT) to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly electrical power systems of the future, with reliance on green energy, renewable energy sources and electrification of transport. The thee-day event is expected to attract up to 600 international delegates a day from Europe, USA, Middle East and Asia bringing significant economic benefit to Manchester.
The conference is being hosted by the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of The University of Manchester, which is internationally acclaimed as one of the leading schools in the world in the area of electrical power engineering. The organisers, Professors Jovica Milanović and Peter Crossley said: “It is such a thrill and honour for us to be hosting this industry leading event in our home city of Manchester. The conference will be a forum for participants to discuss and exhibit state-of-the-art innovations in renewable energy generation and storage, electricity network automation, information and communication technology and electrical transport. It will attract some of the leading industrialists and academics working in these fields from around the world.”
This is another esteemed achievement for the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of The University of Manchester, and is a significant international win for Manchester Central, who are firmly establishing themselves on the international association circuit.
Paula Lorimer, Manchester Central’s Sales Director, said: “We are very pleased that we could help the team to bring this event to Manchester. It is very highly regarded in their sector, and is helping The University of Manchester lead in the search for sustainable and environmentally friendly energy supply solutions.”
Manchester Central’s position in the international marketplace has been strengthened by the venue’s £30million redevelopment programme, completed in September 2010. Along with the newly enhanced facilities, Manchester Central benefits from 2,500 hotel rooms within five minutes’ walk and an exceptional transport infrastructure, which includes one of Europe’s leading airports, making it easily accessible for national and international delegates.
