Published at 11:21 on 4th of February 2011
Manchester Central Convention Complex has been chosen to host the 2012 European Microscopy Congress, which will generate over £3 million of economic benefits for Manchester and the surrounding region.
The Congress takes place every 4 years in cities throughout Europe; previous locations include Antwerp, Budapest, Prague and Rome. The event was last held in the UK in 1988 in York and their last visit to Manchester was 38 years ago, in 1972.
The Congress is organised on behalf of the European Microscopy Society and is hosted in each country by its national member association. The Royal Microscopical Society (RMS) will be the UK hosts of the 2012 European Congress in Manchester.
Commenting on the selection of Manchester Central for their 2012 Congress, the President of the European Microscopy Society, Paul Midgley, said: “After a detailed search, an excellent opportunity emerged in the form of the award-winning Manchester Central Convention Complex. It was evident that this Centre offered everything necessary for a superb microscopy congress, including ample space for exhibition, posters, plenary lectures and parallel sessions and all within an extremely convenient central location. Moreover, Manchester and its surrounding area is a booming region, known particularly for sports and music, easily reached from almost all major European cities and can act as a hub for many interesting and fun pre- and post-congress activities.”
The 6-day event will take place from the 16 September – 21 September 2012, and is expected to attract over 1,500 delegates per day. It will feature Europe’s largest exhibition dedicated to microscopy, imaging and analysis, as well as a conference programme of over 60 focussed sessions, plus a full social programme.
Commenting, Manchester Central’s Sales Director, Paula Lorimer, said: “This is another significant win for Manchester Central as a venue, and for Manchester as a destination. The recently completed redevelopment has significantly increased our capacity and flexibility, which has subsequently improved our international market potential. Being selected by an international congress such as European Microscopy is testament to this.”
