Cancer Research UK makes Manchester Central ‘Shine’!
Published at 16:00 on 29th of April 2010
On Saturday 17 April 7,500 charity walkers lit up Manchester Central as they took part in Cancer Research UK’s ‘Shine’ event - a night-time walking marathon around the city.
The walkers, many of who are suffering from cancer themselves, assembled under the iconic arches of Manchester Central before being sent on their way at 10pm by Denis Law, the former Manchester United and Manchester City legend who has himself battled prostate cancer. The participants walked around Manchester throughout the night carrying Cancer Research balloons and lighting up the city with candlelight.
Commenting Gareth Headley, Manchester Central’s Head of Marketing, said; “This was a great event for a great charity. There was a fantastic atmosphere around Manchester Central as the walkers were getting ready to set off. We were very proud to be a part of it.”
Organisers hope that ‘Shine’ events will raise £1m for Cancer Research.
